it has happened...when we had just about believed the likes of Infy and TATA cannot do it...came a blow to prove us wrong.
Infosys did it too...laid off 2100 employees, yes they say poor performance, but we read the hidden message here 'poor economy'
Are the companies laying off to be blamed...? i am not sure. All i can say is, if the company laying off has enuff money to last this turbulence, not one employee should be touched...coz it is these very employees who helped them grow, and when the ship is rocking just a bit, you ask them to get off...? the point is, many companies are using recession as an excuse to cut cost and better the margins.
I say, if survival is an issue then ...maybe, else there is no way you should do it ... no other reason is justified...
wonder if there can be a committee to audit this kinda stuff !!!

i guess true...it is in TOI today...
Perhaps Infy has always done it, but it's in the news only this year?
Also, to play the devil's advocate, why is it wrong to use layoffs for improving margins? Employees don't work for free: they work at market rates, by and large. In good times, all industries are hit with very high attrition rates. These things cut both ways...
You are such a kind person
Unfortunately, its all justified. There is nothing right or wrong. A business is all about profit and loss. It has to cut costs and control spending, and execute layoffs when times are bad otherwise it will not survive. And when that happens, the whole ship sinks and everyone working there will lose their jobs.
@ Ankur - Devils should not be allowed to hire advocates :) well on a serious note, i understand what u say, but i am coming from it totally from a humanitarian ground, when a company knows that they have money, they should not let people go jobless, these people have families, kids and commitments, no...just should not...
@ arun - here kind are just my thoughts...hope i can do some kind deeds too
@ cosmic - i know what you saying but if they know that will sail through even having these extra people onboard - then why not...i believe in karma...be nice in all the ways possible...and nice will happen to u...
Firing people is an important part of running an organization. I am sure most companies before letting go of people do at least some rudimentary analysis of not just present input but also future potential of a person...and some people just don't reach the minimum level. The important thing is that only these people get fired. Meaning on basis of capability and potential instead of other irrelevant factors.
As an employee, I would prefer being let go if I wasn't doing a good job. Of course my case is very very different since I have no financial burdens.
@ D - nahin yaar...u will be surprised to know that most of the times the layoffs are not abt performance...
Ya its unfortunate when people get fired for reasons that are not either related to performance or general fitment. It's just not right.
